Not Joost Klein (26) but Jesse Wijnans (31) is the first Dutchman to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest this year. Just like last year, the Breda-born dancer is part of the Finnish entry, which will compete in the first semi-final on Tuesday evening. A bizarre coincidence, says Jesse in conversation with the ‘ANP’.

“I’m on stage looking very much like the ‘Backstreet Boy’ with a hand on my heart and hand kisses”

Jesse has been participating in Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, the Finnish national song festival, for five years. Last year the winning act, in which he was one of four pink-clad backing dancers for Käärijä, was sent to Liverpool and Finland promptly came second with the song ‘Cha Cha Cha’. He never dared to think that Wijnans would go for a second year in a row. “I was assigned to the Windows95man act this year and I thought: I will never go again. And yes, apparently so,” Wijnans laughs.

Coincidentally, Windows95man’s show is almost as absurdist as Käärijä’s. The artist stands half-naked on stage and crawls out of a gigantic egg at the start of his act. Jesse dances around him like ‘a kind of boy band type’. “Windows95man is a kind of caricature of himself: super exaggerated and ‘goofy’. He is not very serious,” the Dutchman describes. “I’m on stage playing the ‘Backstreet Boy’ with a hand on my heart and kisses. I find that very funny.”

Compared to last year, Jesse experiences less pressure. The Finns are not one of the favorites this time and the choreography is not that difficult either. “I notice that things are a bit more chilled now. I can lean back a bit more. This year it will be really exciting whether we will continue to the final.” Jesse doesn’t think there will be much concern if Windows95man doesn’t make it. “If we don’t reach the final, that would be a shame, but also fine,” he says. “Everyone is just really happy to be here.”

Windows95man performs his song ‘No Rules!’ finished tenth in the first semi-final on Tuesday evening. The Netherlands cannot help Jesse reach the final. Viewers can only vote in the second semi-final, if Joost Klein participates.
