For the first time since the lockdowns, nine schools participated in the traffic day organized by the Antwerp International School. The children had to complete a bicycle course and learn about traffic signs and rules.

“Belgium is truly a cycling country, which is why I think it is very good that the district focuses on cycling safety and knowledge about it. And you can’t start early enough. Today all classes passed, from the smallest, three-year-olds to twelve-year-olds.”

Wayne Quenneville, the primary school director of the Antwerp International School (AIS), is a big supporter of the traffic day. The school has been organizing this information day for more than 25 years, this year on Tuesday, April 23. Nine primary schools in Ekeren passed by at this edition.

“Before the lockdowns we organized it for all schools. But that thread was not immediately picked up again after the pandemic. This year was the first time that we opened our doors again traffic day.”

Program

During a two-kilometer walk, the students were drilled into traffic signs and traffic rules. The lessons also had the theme of the traffic day. In the Moerenhoutlaan, in front of the AIS school building, they all completed a course by bicycle.

“During the course it was important that they become aware of their surroundings. Maintain stability and be able to respond to unexpected obstacles or other road users.”

With their bicycles they had to zigzag between cones, pick up small sandbags on a table, throw the bags in a bin along the road, and take sharp bends and roundabouts.

Due to the beautiful weather and the fun cycling activities, the educational day was greatly appreciated by the students. (mdcl)
