After nights full of tension between Kurds and Turks, the Ghent police registered no incidents on Thursday night. The corps was present on the site en masse.

Ghent police spokesman Matto Langeraert speaks of a very quiet evening and night. “We were present in the street scene. There were no incidents and no people were arrested,” it said.

Since last week there has been tension in Ghent between Turks and Kurds. A Kurdish New Year’s party lit the fuse. Two Turkish teenagers were beaten at the beginning of this week and the situation in Ghent has since escalated, partly due to influence from abroad.

On both Tuesday and Wednesday nights, young Turkish men attacked commercial properties of Kurdish owners. 22 men were arrested and weapons were seized. No injuries were reported.

There were emphatic calls for calm from the police, the mayor and on Thursday evening from people from the Ghent-Turkish and Kurdish community.

A ban on gatherings has also been in place since Thursday: from 9 p.m. it is forbidden to go on the street with 10 people or more at ten locations where there is unrest.

A march is planned for Saturday in the center of Ghent to demand a ceasefire in Gaza. It is currently uncertain whether that march can still continue safely.
