Along the Scheldt river in Avelgem, Belgium, a cyclist got the fright of his life on Thursday morning. The man found human remains: a piece of a shoulder with an arm attached to it.

“The arm is complete, with a hand with a wedding ring on one of the fingers,” says police spokesman Tom Janssens. “Exactly how the arm ended up here is being investigated. For example, we take into account that the body part comes from someone who ended up in the Scheldt in unknown circumstances and was brought back to shore by an animal, for example. But other scenarios are also being investigated. The wedding ring is a valuable element for identification. DNA testing will also be important.”

From France?

It is not yet clear whether the body part found belongs to a man or a woman. The area has been closed off for the investigation and the fire brigade placed a tent. Detectives from the forensic investigation team have also been deployed. A forensic doctor performs the autopsy on the body part.

The Missing Persons Cell has also been activated. “There are still a lot of questions at the moment,” says Tom Janssens. “For example, given the strong current on the Scheldt, it could perfectly be that the body whose arm has now been found has already ended up in the water in France.”
