But after Ireland-Belgium and England-Belgium, two players seem to have lost points, both in the same position: Olivier Deman and Arthur Theate. Against an opponent who is 62nd in the world rankings, Deman showed that he is still a bit light for the Red Devils.

And opposite Jarred Bowen, a player who is normally not always a starter for England, Theate had a very bad evening.

Castagne in the left back position?

On the other side, on the right, on the right, Thomas Meunier played a great game. He even finished as captain against Ireland, a clear sign from the national coach.

In short: he is again the official backup at right back. Unless there is a surprise, Meunier will be at the 2024 European Championship. And he should become even stronger thanks to his starting position in Turkey at Trabzonspor.

But what does his return have to do with the left back position? Well, quite simply because Timothy Castagne can play there too. At Atalanta Bergamo, when he proved himself to the public, the former Genk player played as many games on the left as on the right.

Theate… or Vertonghen as a victim?

Domenico Tedesco has not yet considered Castagne as a left back, but that is mainly due to the lack of options on the right. With Thomas Meunier returning and given the national coach’s clear appreciation for the former Dortmund player, the idea may grow in his mind.

It remains to be seen who will pay the price. This could of course be Arthur Theate, who has played more at left-back since Tedesco arrived. But Jan Vertonghen, who was not great against England, also seems less untouchable than expected – and then Theate would take his place in the center.

However, it is difficult to imagine that a duo Theate-Faes will start the European Championship 2024 without real automatisms. In any case, we will have to wait and see.
