‘Swing states’, ‘battleground states’ or warring states

Most states can be predicted for which presidential candidate they will go. California and New York are known as Democratic bastions of power, while states such as Alabama and Oklahoma traditionally go to the Republicans.

There are also a number of states where the outcome of the elections is less easy to predict. Sometimes the Republican candidate wins the state, but 4 years later the voters can still elect a Democrat. Being ‘swing states’, because they ‘swing back and forth’ between the Republicans and the Democrats. Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Michigan are among the ‘swing states’.

Those states are important because they can make the difference in the race for the White House. Look at the presidential elections of the year 2000, between Democrat Al Gore (known from the documentary ‘An inconvenient truth’) and Republican George W. Bush. In the state of Florida, Bush received only a few hundred votes more than Gore, after 6 million people in the state had voted. Recounts were carried out and a long legal process started, but with Florida in his hands, Bush ultimately won the election. Democratic former President Barack Obama won Florida twice.
