ANTWERP – The Bervoetstraat is 44^ste school street in Antwerp, and will from now on be closed with a barrier. A total of seventeen school streets in Antwerp are already equipped with such a fixed barrier.

The Bervoetstraat is located between the Mechelseplein and the South. It was Koen Kennis (N-VA), alderman for mobility, who, together with the management of the primary school of the Sint Lutgardis school, located at house number 25, and some schoolchildren, put the barrier into use this morning.

Knowledge: ‘The school street in Bervoetstraat received a favorable evaluation and will become permanent.’

‘In addition, the street was recently redeveloped as a residential area. We have also found a place on the corner with Begijnenstraat to place a barrier to facilitate the organization of the school street.’

‘In the long term, we intend to provide every Antwerp school street with such a barrier.’

‘I would also like to thank the volunteers who man these barriers when opening and closing the schools. That shows a great commitment.’

Anneke Rombouts, director of SLA Primary School: ‘We are very happy with the redevelopment of the street and now also the installation of the barrier.’

‘I only hear positive reactions from the parents. By the way, the pole looks very nice, very nicely integrated into the streetscape, and easy to use for our volunteers.’

By designing school streets, the city of Antwerp wants to improve road safety in school environments.
