Hooglede/Roeselare

A 51-year-old man from Hooglede entered two homes under the influence of the zombie drug flakka and was sentenced to one year in prison. The burglar behaved extremely strangely. A victim was able to convince the man to leave by giving him a banana. According to his lawyer, he was just hungry.

The first incident took place on November 13 last year. PR entered a home in Hooglede. The residents were at home and were startled by the noise. The man smashed a rear window and injured himself. “There was a trail of blood at the window and great disorder in the living room,” the prosecutor described at the trial. “In the end he just stole some coins.”

The victims were very impressed by the burglary. “We no longer sleep like we used to and take medication,” he said. “And then on his Facebook there is also the text ‘ex-criminal, now retired’. It’s like he’s laughing at it. This could have ended much worse.”

The man did not remember much of the facts afterwards, he was under the influence of the infamous zombie drug flakka.

Banana

On January 21, PR again entered a home, this time in Roeselare. The victim, a woman in a wheelchair, caught the man red-handed but remained icy calm. However, PR stole her handbag and knocked her mobile phone out of her hands when she wanted to notify the police. However, the man quickly returned the handbag and said he was hungry.

The woman offered him a banana. R. took it and fled without any further loot. “My client understands that he came across as very threatening, but had no bad intentions,” R.’s lawyer said at the trial. “If he really wanted to steal, he would have done so. He was just hungry and begged for a banana.”

R.’s lawyer asked for guidance for the man at the trial, but the judge did not respond. The man was sentenced to one year in prison.
