Two days ago, riots started between members of the Turkish community and supporters of the pro-Kurdish party PKK in Heusden and Houthalen-Helchteren. On Monday evening, seven people were arrested and administratively arrested for fierce aggression. The municipality is now canceling a number of events on the advice of the crisis cell.

In the Limburg districts of Lillo in Houthalen-Helchteren and Lindeman in Heusden-Zolder, residents are recovering from the heavy riots that broke out on Sunday evening. Members of the Turkish community clashed with a group of supporters of the pro-Kurdish party PKK. Since the start of the riots, there has been a lot of unrest in the municipalities.

Meanwhile, seven people have been administratively arrested since Monday evening after they actively behaved aggressively. These administrative arrests are separate from the judicial investigation that is still ongoing.

Mayor Borremans emphasizes the importance of maintaining calm. “The events of the past few days have caused understandable concern, but it is now more important than ever to remain calm and not give in to unfounded rumors on social media,” it said. “We understand that there is a lot of incorrect information circulating on social media platforms. That is why we call for caution and to consult reliable sources and official statements from the local government and the police,” says Borremans.

Cancellation MyMarket

For the major events in our municipality, we are still following the advice of the crisis unit for the time being. For this reason, the market committee decided, in consultation with the market leader and the market vendors, to cancel the MijnMarkt edition of March 27.

The next MijnMarkt is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10. Despite all the challenges, the local government emphasizes that daily life must be allowed to continue as normal. “Peace is restored in education and operations in the various neighborhoods are also picking up again. Naturally, the various municipal services are in close contact with all parties involved and provide support where necessary.”

“In these difficult times, I call on all residents for calm and solidarity. Let’s work together to keep our community safe and peaceful. I am especially grateful for the efforts of our police forces and the hard work of everyone involved. That effort led to 7 additional arrests last night and a quiet night on our Koolmijnlaan,” said Mayor Borremans. Our police services will of course continue to closely monitor and support the situation
