Since Sunday afternoon there has been a lot of unrest in Heusden-Zolder and Houthalen-Helchteren due to tensions between Kurdish PKK supporters and the Turkish community. Riots broke out on Sunday evening, in which at least six people were injured. And emotions also flared on Monday afternoon and evening.

A total of seven people have been administratively arrested since Sunday afternoon. “On Monday evening, four people were involved, three had already been arrested before that,” says Kris Janssen, chief of police of the Heusden-Zolder police. “It was about people who took an actively aggressive stance. They were arrested administratively, which means they were locked up in jail for a maximum of 12 hours. As soon as peace was restored, they were released.” The administrative arrests are separate from the judicial investigation into the riots, which is still ongoing.
