Festive news for those who like to stretch their dancing legs. The building on the Posthof Bridge in Berchem is currently still under scaffolding, but will eventually house a party hall for 480 people in addition to offices.

The area around Berchem Station has undergone a significant transformation in recent years. For example, the police moved into the new master building last year and office spaces and a supermarket were also completed. In the building under construction on the Posthof Bridge, next to the train station, there is also room for a party room.

“The area around Antwerp-Berchem train station is a prime location for large-scale office developments,” says Alderman of Urban Development Annick De Ridder (N-VA). “This was already included in the strategic Spatial Structure Plan for Antwerp in 2006. This environment can be divided into two areas, separated by the railway: Post planning area of the RUP-Posthofbrug.”

Alderman for Urban Development Annick De Ridder. “There is a social need for a party hall for youth and this area is ideally suited for that,” she says.

What appears on that last site? “Large-scale office developments in combination with recreational and social functions,” De Ridder continues. “This certainly includes the construction of a party hall for youth, a commuter bicycle parking lot and a publicly accessible square. RUP Posthofbrug makes an essential contribution to the modal shift and fits nicely within the framework of Ringstad, the urban development project supervised by the city architect, which connects the inner city and the outer city.”

Operator

“The licensed party room will be 160 square meters in size and can accommodate 480 people,” says De Ridder. “There is a social need for a party hall for youth and this area is ideally suited for that. This room is located on the ground floor, on level 1 there will be bicycle sheds for 650 bicycles. After the transfer of ownership from the developer to the city, AG Vespa will launch a call to find an operator, who will then start the effective operation of this party hall.”

Berchem’s district councilor for Youth, Kris Gysels (Open VLD), reacts enthusiastically. “Now that parties can no longer be organized in the hall of the former youth organization Den Eglantier, the need is great,” he says. “We are therefore in joyful anticipation.” (jaba)
