It was a big party in the Immaculata residential care center, because resident Emilienne Vermeulen was allowed to blow out a hundred candles on Friday.

Resident Emilienne (Emmy) Vermeulen, who has been staying at the Immaculata Residential Care Center for three years, celebrated her hundredth birthday on Friday, March 22. This milestone was festively celebrated at Residence Calla in the presence of her family and all staff members. Chairman of WoonZorgNetwerk Edegem, Brigitte Vermeulen-Goris was present to present Emmy with a gift from the king.

Emmy was born in La Hulpe, near Brussels, but soon moved to Antwerp. There she worked for many years as a social worker at the National Work for War Victims. Moreover, she has had a love for music since childhood, she played the piano and enjoys listening to classical concerts. She also had a subscription to the zoo to support the animals, because they were her favorite animals, she often visited the elephants and monkeys.

Second centenarian

In ten weeks’ time, the Immaculata residential care center is celebrating the second centenary resident in its midst. “Edegem has been known for years as one of the most aging municipalities in the southern edge. A quarter of the residents are now 65 years or older. Yet it is also unique for us to celebrate a centenary,” says Max Cassiers, communications expert at WoonZorgNetwerk Edegem. (IT)
