An accident happened on the bridge over the Albert Canal in Beringen on Friday afternoon. A truck drove over the cycle path and almost ended up in the water. The 54-year-old driver from Lanaken was injured.

The precise circumstances of the accident are still unclear. The fact is that the truck first drove onto the cycle path of the bridge, then collided with a bridge and eventually ended up hanging above the canal. Fortunately, there were no cyclists around at the time. The vehicle just missed landing in the water. The driver, a 54-year-old man from Lanaken, was injured and taken to the Sint-Franciscus Hospital in Heusden-Zolder. Another vehicle was involved in the accident, but no one was injured. Although the vehicle did sustain minor material damage. (read more below the map)

The Beringen/Ham/Tessenderlo police and an ambulance arrived on the scene. The truck is being towed, but that will not be an easy task. Due to the accident, only one lane on the bridge is open, causing heavy traffic disruption in the area.
