ROYALTYKing Charles (75) has scaled back his public activities during his cancer treatment, but the British monarch wanted to deliver a message to the people on Maundy Thursday. In a speech, which he had recorded in advance, he calls for “in a time of need to extend a friendly hand to those who need it” and promises to “continue to serve the nation with all my heart.” Along with the audio, Buckingham Palace also shared a new official photo of Charles.

The Holy Thursday church service always had a very special meaning for the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles. It is therefore “with regret” that King Charles could not be present in Worcester, where the mass was celebrated this year. Camilla was present.

“The White service has a very special place in my heart,” he begins the message, in which he commemorates how Jesus washed the feet of the apostles. An example of how we should care for each other, Charles continues: “As a nation, we have every interest in extending a friendly hand, especially in a time of need.” It also reminds him of the promise he made “to serve and not be served” when he took the throne some 18 months ago. “And I will continue to do so, with all my heart.”

His message comes as he prepares to attend the Easter service with Camilla at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Easter Sunday. It will be his first major public appearance since his cancer diagnosis.

Prince William, Princess Kate and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are unlikely to attend. The family spend the Easter holidays together in Norfolk after Kate announced she is being treated for cancer. On March 25, the couple and their three children George, Charlotte and Louis were spotted in a helicopter en route to the English countryside. In all likelihood, they will withdraw from public life for a longer period of time. When the news about Princess Kate’s abdominal surgery was announced, it was stated that she would cancel her public activities until Easter. But the chance that she will be present during the mass celebration on Sunday seems extremely small.
