In the Instagram post we see Schuurman as a twenty-year-old posing for the camera. “I always thought I was so terribly ugly in this photo and hated that I kept seeing it – because it was apparently in the photo base of many media – in all kinds of articles about me,” the actress writes under the photo in question. The image dates from her time at MTV Europe.

When she looks at the photo, the song “Everybody’s Free” by Baz Luhram automatically plays in her head. That’s why she also refers to the message of that song. “Just be kind to yourself and not just about how you look. Especially about what you do, where you fail, or what you should do and be able to do better yourself.” Finally, she critically addresses her younger self with a lesson she learned over the years. “Just try a little less hard, and strangely enough, things often suddenly get much better.”

Schuurman’s family is currently going through a difficult period, her daughter’s father is currently in prison. Thijs Römer is serving a month in prison for online abuse. The actress previously stated that she is doing well despite the circumstances.
