Just like adults, children may naturally have differences in the color of their teeth. Some children have naturally whiter teeth, while others have naturally yellower teeth. These color variations may be genetic and usually do not affect dental health.

And it says nothing about your upbringing. Because it really isn’t always due to brushing.

This mother is concerned about her 5-year-old daughter’s teeth. ‘Her baby teeth are already quite yellow, what kind of teeth will she get next? She just brushes every day, but they are really a bit discolored. She does eat sweets sometimes, yes. But not all day long either. So how does this happen? And above all: how does she get whiter teeth? It looks so unsavory.’

Teeth are yellow: what now?

Yellow teeth are also caused by other things. Some medications, especially antibiotics such as tetracycline and doxycycline, can permanently discolor children’s teeth if taken during tooth enamel development. This is often seen as streaky or spotty discoloration. Some children have naturally thinner tooth enamel or other genetic factors that can lead to greater susceptibility to tooth discoloration.

Sometimes daily brushing alone is not enough to prevent discoloration. A child’s teeth may not be cleaned thoroughly enough, causing plaque and tartar to build up and slowly discolor the teeth. Be sure to visit the dentist to ask for advice: because sometimes something can really be done about it.
