ME/CFS is a complex multi-system disease in which the nervous system, immune system, hormonal system and energy production in the cells no longer function properly. The result is an overpowering, ever-present exhaustion. POTS is a disease of the autonomic nervous system. When Maaike stands up, too little blood and therefore oxygen reaches her heart and brain. The heart wants to compensate for this by beating very quickly and this has the opposite effect.

“Her complaints started in 2011 after a difficult pregnancy and three liters of blood loss. She developed fibromyalgia, a mild form of ME/CFS and a dysregulated nervous system. The blow came after her Covid vaccination in 2021. She developed moderate ME/CFS and POTS, and was even too sick to stand. Since then she has been surviving instead of living,” said friend Kim.
