Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root plant native to the Andes of Peru and known for its cruciferous relationship with broccoli and cauliflower. The use of maca dates back thousands of years and was traditionally consumed by indigenous peoples for its nutritious and medicinal properties. The root is used in various nutritional supplements. Typically, maca comes in powder form, but it is also available as capsules or pills.

You can dissolve maca powder in smoothies, milkshakes, fresh fruit juice, coffee, tea or in your plant-based morning drink, but you can also add it to yogurt and breakfast cereals or to soup and desserts. Please read the package leaflet carefully and stick to the recommended dose.

Maca is rich in several essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids, making it a highly nutritious food source. It has received a lot of attention for its potential benefits for sexual function and improving fertility. Studies suggest that maca can improve libido and reduce sexual dysfunction in both men and women. Additionally, maca is considered an adaptogen, a plant species that helps the body naturally adapt to stressors such as a busy schedule or illness.

Possible health effects

In addition to its use for sexual health, maca is said to help against fatigue. It helps to boost your energy levels, improve your mood and relieve menopausal symptoms. Some research suggests that maca may also help maintain healthy bones and cognitive function, although more extensive studies are needed to substantiate these claims.

Maca powder side effects

Although maca is generally considered safe for most people, it does have potential side effects, especially when taken in large quantities. Side effects may include altered mood, insomnia and digestive problems. As with any supplement, it is advisable to consult a doctor before use.
