MUSIC‘Hopes and Fears’, the debut album by the British pop band Keane, has been around for twenty years. It became one of the best-selling British albums of all time. “But we didn’t really know what we were doing at the time,” Tom Chaplin (45) and Tim Rice-Oxley (47) tell Ulrike D’hauwer on Q-Allstars. A conversation about the early beginnings of the group and the concert in the Royal Circus in Brussels.

‘Somewhere Only We Know’, ‘Everybody’s Changing’ and ‘This Is The Last Time’. These are just a few hits on Keane’s album ‘Hopes and Fears’, which won numerous awards, including a Brit Award for ‘Best British Album’ and ‘British Breakthrough Act’. Today the numbers are still grayed out. “We never expected it to be such a success,” say Chaplin and Rice-Oxley of the popular band. “’Somewhere Only We Know’ in particular has been reinvented over the years thanks to the many covers and TikTok has also breathed new life into it. That’s really fantastic, because that way we reach a completely different audience with our music.” The successful band also notices this during their performances. “It is not only the fans from twenty years ago who come to our concerts, but there are different generations present. That is very exciting.”

The men still cherish Keane’s early beginnings today. “In some areas we haven’t changed much. We still love making music and we are still a bunch of friends from East Sussex.” Yet there are also some major contrasts, they believe. “During the creation process of ‘Hopes and Fears’ we didn’t really know what we were doing,” the duo admits. “We were very self-conscious and unhealthy dynamics developed within the group. We have been working on this over the years.” Nowadays they spend their time in the studio again. Will there be new music coming soon? “New songs are coming, but we don’t know when yet,” it sounds mysterious.

Keane will perform in a sold-out Royal Circus in Brussels on Thursday evening. The successful group also played there on Wednesday evening. Ulrike D’hauwer therefore has a pressing question: “What do you think of the Belgian fans?” The studio remains silent for a moment, after which everyone bursts into laughter. “At first the crowd is quite reserved, but by the end all the fans are dancing. Then they go all out. It is the ultimate climax,” they conclude.
