There will be a number of adjustments to the return moment for novice drivers. The Flemish government decided this on the proposal of Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters (Open Vld). For example, in the future each recognized institution will have to have one manual and one automatic transmission vehicle.

Since January 1, 2019, drivers are obliged to attend a return period 6 to 9 months after issuance of their driving license B. This is a mandatory four-hour training with the aim of increasing road safety and reducing the number of young drivers in accident statistics. The return moment consists of a practical part and a group discussion about, among other things, traffic attitude.

Last year the return moment was evaluated, partly based on surveys among both teachers and participants. Partly based on this, a number of adjustments are now being made.

Death of a family member

The minimum number of participants per session is reduced from six to four. There will no longer be a fixed duration for each part (introduction, practice, group discussion), but a minimum duration. Each recognized institution will also be required to have both one manual and one automatic transmission vehicle. The latter vehicle may be an electric vehicle.

Furthermore, at least one vehicle per six participants will have to be provided instead of one per three. The death of a family member now also counts as a valid reason to postpone the return date.
