The softening works at Malle airport will be closed until July 31 due to the breeding season. After the demolition of the runway and the demolition of fifteen buildings, 60% of the total volume of concrete and asphalt has already been removed.

These valuable raw materials are recovered by the contractor and used in the yards of Oosterweel and in the port of Antwerp.

More than eight hectares of valuable dune grasslands, heathland and forest are now given the opportunity to recover, which contributes to the preservation of European protected rare habitats.

“We remain committed to strengthening nature and increasing biodiversity at Malle Airport. After the Blue Deal works, more than sixteen hectares will be paved, making the airport an oasis of biodiversity,” says Flemish Minister of the Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA).

Recovery

The contractor uses an innovative resonance breaker, which processes concrete in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The noise and dust impact with this machine is a lot lower than with a classic demolition hammer.

The blue gravel layer and layer of clean pebbles under the asphalt (four hectares) were separated into fractions by contractor Stadsbader to transport them as valuable raw materials to Oosterweel and the port of Antwerp. The concrete was transported in larger pieces to Oosterweel for further breaking and use again on yards in the port of Antwerp.

Stadsbader, the contractor responsible for the softening works, is satisfied with the recovered concrete. “It is still of good quality,” it sounds.

Phase 2 runs from August 2024 to the end of March 2025. After that, work can be done on the design of nature, hopefully including some walking paths.
