In Almere Oosterwold the NOAHH | Network Oriented Architecture designed Villa Vaartjes delivered. The lifelong home consists of three parts around a central patio, each of which is designed as a pavilion, focused on its own activity such as living and sleeping. The house is constructed from prefabricated laminated wooden structures that can be dismantled.

The villa is located on an archaeological site with unobstructed views. The private part of the plot is designed as a continuous deck above the archaeological zone. The central patio forms both the focal point of the villa and the landscape, which continues into the house due to its fragmented design.

An important source of inspiration for the design of the villa is the optimism of ‘Mid-century American architecture’, with aspects that refer to Richard Neutra’s Kronish House in Los Angeles. The house consists of spaces that flow into each other in a continuum – and are divided into separate units, connected by a wrap-around veranda and a lower transparent central part.

The villa consists of three, which are connected by glass partitions and each designed as a pavilion. The ‘residential house’ is the largest pavilion with dining room and living room. The ‘sleeping house’ is surrounded by nature on all sides and is a peaceful place. The ‘workhouse’ is closest to the street. Here are also the accommodation facilities for guests. The house can be further expanded in the future with a care pavilion or an extra greenhouse or ‘biosphere’.

The zero-on-the-meter home has three temperature zones and provides its own energy via a heat pump and solar panels. Each pavilion has its own installations. The overhangs and awnings provide natural sun protection, and on the verandas sliding sandwich panels provide extra sun protection and shelter like a second skin.

A plant and vegetable greenhouse captures heat and buffers it to the house. Our own underground rainwater storage provides buffer capacity and savings in drinking water. As is usual in Oosterwold, at least half of the plot is intended for urban agriculture. The house also has an integrated greenhouse, where crops from the orchard and vegetable garden can continue to grow.

The wood in the house is finished with a completely natural stain.
