Cian Uijtdebroeks will be the Belgian hope for a good classification in the Giro. Yet there are also doubts at Visma-Lease a Bike about what the young Belgian is doing.
Last year, Cian Uijtdebroeks (21) immediately finished eighth in the Vuelta on his debut in a big tour. Since his switch to Visma-Lease a Bike, Uijtdebroeks does not seem to have made any real progress.
Uijtdebroeks finished fifth in O Gran Camiño and seventh in the Tirreno-Adriatico this year, but had to retire in the final stage of the Tour of Catalonia. Uijtdebroeks had already dropped to 17th place in the rankings.
“I think it was the sum of the winter, a long training block and tough races in tough conditions,” sports director Marc Reef said in a statement. Sporza for that assignment in Catalonia.
Uijtdebroeks’ expectations for the Giro
After the Tour of Catalonia, Uijtdebroeks went on an altitude training camp, after which he also completed a training camp in Denia. The young Belgian goes to Italy healthy and well and is physically ready for the Giro.
Yet there are also doubts about what will happen in Italy. “If you base this Giro on Tirreno-Adriatico, he can compete for the top 10 in this Giro. If you look at Catalonia, that becomes a difficult story.”
