The Lier police have started an investigation into a fight that took place on Friday at Campus Arthur Vanderpoorten of the Atheneum. A 15-year-old boy received a lot of blows. The fight was filmed and the images quickly circulated on social media.

The facts took place on Friday after school at Campus Arthur Vanderpoorten of the Atheneum in Lier. A 15-year-old boy is surrounded by several dozen other students. Video footage circulating on social media shows the boy receiving several blows to the head and a number of stomps from two guests. The bystanders do not intervene.

“We were not called to the scene for the fight, but in the meantime the boy did file a complaint,” says police spokeswoman Magalie Der Boven of the local zone. “We take this seriously and have started an investigation. Based on the information we currently have, such as the camera images, we are doing everything we can to identify the fighters. In any case, the matter will come to an end.”

The boy, who is very impressed, suffered minor injuries in the incident. According to his mother, it is not the first time that there have been violent incidents at a Lierse school. “But we certainly do not have a major violence problem,” says Der Boven. “Some problems shift from the big cities to Lier, but it is certainly not the case that there are such fights every week. We will remain alert.”

Drill rap

Mayor Rik Verwaest (N-VA) also comments that it would be unsafe in Lierse school environments. “We have many schools and unfortunately there are students who go too far, but there are no major problems. We notice this on the ground and in the figures. But of course we take every fight seriously and the police and the public prosecutor’s office will do their job.”

A few years ago, Lier had to deal with so-called drill rappers who caused a nuisance. They boasted of weapons and glorified violence. “But we eventually got that problem under control quite quickly,” said the mayor.
