The bodies of Australian brothers Callum (33) and Jake Robinson (30) and their American friend Jack Carter (30) were found last week, after the trio had been missing for more than a week. The three were at the bottom of a fifty-foot deep pit in a remote area. “All three were shot in the head with one bullet,” the prosecutor in Mexico said.

The parents reacted with shock to the death of their children: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Callum and Jake have been murdered,” said mother Debra Robinson. “Callum was a loving person, he was known as ‘the big koala’. His brother Jake was a joyful, gentle soul full of compassion. We also mourn the loss of Carter Rhoad, a dear friend. They were young men who enjoyed their passion for surfing together.”

Debra and Martin Robinson spoke to the media from the beach in San Diego, their son Callum’s new home in the United States. Last weekend the couple traveled to Mexico to identify the bodies of their sons. They want their bodies repatriated to Australia as soon as possible: “It’s time to get them home, to their family and friends, and to the ocean waves in Australia,” the mother said.

Killed for car tires

The brothers and American friend were shot dead by thieves who targeted the surfers’ truck. The thieves preyed on the car’s tires, authorities announced on Sunday. The killers tried to destroy all evidence. The surfers’ tent was burned down, the pickup was driven several kilometers away and then also set on fire. The bodies of the three men were then dumped into the fifteen meter deep pit.

The region where they stayed is known for drug violence and it cannot be ruled out that the three were killed by a cartel, Mexican media report. There is a negative travel advice for the region due to ‘possible kidnappings and crime’.

Three people were arrested in the investigation into the murders. The police have not ruled out that more arrests will follow.
