A Chinese zoo has become the target of ridicule and criticism after images of its ‘pandas’ were shared on social media. The zoo was not given any real giant pandas, so they used white and black paint to transform two chow chows into ‘panda dogs’.

The Taizhou Zoo was keen to exhibit giant pandas, but because the rare animals are considered a national treasure, zoos must meet strict conditions to get some. The zoo in Taizhou did not comply and was not allocated any giant pandas, so alternatives were sought and some ‘panda dogs’ were ordered.

According to the zoo, the remarkable chow chows are very popular with visitors, but there is also a lot of criticism because the dogs were painted. “But don’t people also dye their hair?”, the zoo responds. “With natural hair dye without chemicals, this can also be done with dogs if they have a long coat.”
