Those looking for an original idea for a wedding ceremony may want to head to Sardinia. On Is Benas beach, halfway down the west coast of the Italian island, you will soon be able to say yes to your other half naked.

The nudist beach Is Benas in Sardinia has long been popular with naturists. Now that you can also tie the knot naked, it will undoubtedly become even more so. Local authorities came up with the bright idea of allowing nude weddings after a German couple asked permission to get married naked on the beach, says Luigi Tedeschi, the mayor of San Vero Milis, the nearest municipality.

The reason why the mayor gave his blessing for the idea can be called quite philosophical. “I think that given the rise of nationalist movements in Europe, we live in delicate times for people’s freedom. People protest and are arrested by the police, or intimidated. We must do things that show that people are free. Most people want freedom, not a regime,” he told CNN.

The initiative is part of a broader plan to open more nudist beaches in Sardinia. After all, according to the mayor, nudity has nothing to do with sex. “For naturists, being naked is a philosophy of life, a connection with nature. We must respect that. So why not? The beach is ideal for naturism, so if people want to get married naked, that is possible.”

Underwater

For some time now, requests have been pouring in from all over Europe in Sardinia to get married on one of the many beaches on the island, which – dressed – has also been an option for some time. “There are even people who choose to say yes to each other underwater,” Tedeschi told the Italian news agency Ansa.

The fact that this is now also possible naked is welcomed by the Italian naturist association Nudiverso. And according to the mayor, everyone in the village is also in favor of the idea. “They ask me jokingly whether I can lead the ceremony dressed, and whether I can only wear my mayor’s sash. But those are just jokes. In principle, everyone here is in favor,” he told CNN.

Another bonus: by getting married naked, you save a pretty penny that you don’t have to spend on a wedding dress or suit.
