With dirty and torn clothes and disheveled hair: this is how police officers in the municipality of Coín, about 30 kilometers from Malaga in southern Spain, found the Swiss girl on March 18. The discovery dates from almost two months ago, but was only recently made public.

On that Monday afternoon, the police had received a worried telephone call from a passer-by who had noticed the girl and her father in the parking lot of a shopping center, where they wanted to do some shopping. Citizens became alarmed when the feral girl remained crouched and showed signs of separation anxiety.

According to the Swiss news site 20 minutes a local garage owner had also called the police. A man with his daughter had come to him for repairs to their car, but the mechanic also smelled trouble: the vehicle, just like father and daughter, was in very bad condition and dirty. It seemed as if the two were living in it. The white Citroën C3 was full of bags and food.(Read more below the photo)

Civil Guard officers arrived on the scene in Coín and immediately noticed that the girl seemed very nervous. “She looked in all directions and behaved suspiciously,” police chief Óscar Nogueroles told the Spanish TV channel. Antenna 3. “They may have even slept in the car at one point,” said the police chief.

Raised in a forest

The police took the girl and her father to the police station and carried out an identity check. So they noticed that both were internationally signaled. In the search warrant, Swiss authorities had indicated that the teenager’s whereabouts were unknown and that she should be housed in a safe place due to the high risk of escape or kidnapping by her father, whom they consider “a danger to her.” The man had managed to flee Switzerland with his daughters, even though his daughter had already been placed under government custody. It is still unclear exactly when he did this and how long they had been in Spain. (Read more below the photo)

Child protection in Malaga was told by their Swiss colleagues that the father had raised the girl together with her two sisters in a forest, far away from civilization, and constantly on the run from the government and all possible social institutions. The mother of the family had not seen her three daughters in six years. According to the Swiss reports, both parents suffered from psychological problems.

According to the report, the girl had the intellectual capabilities of a very young girl, even though she was already 17 years old and will even come of age at the end of this month. A disadvantage that is undoubtedly caused by the fact that she grew up without social contacts outside her family and with little or no education. According to the care workers who received her, the girl was extremely reserved and avoided eye contact. She was so socially maladjusted that she reportedly didn’t even know how traffic lights worked or how to behave somewhat normally in civilization.

Difficult integration

The teenager was repatriated to Switzerland on May 3, where she has been taken care of and is receiving guidance. This is also necessary, according to Spanish sociologist and children’s rights lawyer Myriam Fernández Nevado. “On a social level, recovery and integration will be very difficult,” she predicts Antenna 3. “She will need guidance from educators, psychologists and doctors,” says the lawyer who specializes in child abuse. “There should have been more supervision in Switzerland,” she also believes.

According to the Spanish daily Sur the girl’s two sisters are now of age. It is still unclear how they are doing. What will happen to the father now remains to be seen. According to Antenna 3 he has been released.
