An Iranian girl (16) who disappeared during protests against the Iranian regime in September 2022 was assaulted and killed when three members of the Iranian security services detained her. The British broadcaster BBC reported this on Tuesday. The official version was that the teenager committed suicide.
The BBC relies on a leaked document. The “highly confidential” report is a summary of a hearing by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, the Islamic Republic’s elite force that also serves as a morality police. The report, which the BBC checked with various sources, mentions the names of the perpetrators and the officers who wanted to cover up the case.
Assaulted, abused and murdered in a refrigerated truck
The BBC quotes extensively from the report, which details what happened in the back of the refrigerated van in which Nika Shakarami (16) was secretly transported after she was arrested during anti-government protests. Shakarami was foreshadowed because she acted like a leader figure. Shortly before her disappearance, she called a friend to say she was being chased by officers.
According to the report, one of the men sat on her while he molested her in the back of the refrigerated truck. The teen was handcuffed but resisted, throwing kicks and cursing. It also turned out that the men hit her with sticks. Her body was eventually dumped on the street.
“Suicide”
The teen’s family found her body in a morgue more than a week after her disappearance. The Iranian regime stated that her death had nothing to do with the protests and that she took her own life.
During the fall 2022 anti-government protests in Iran, demonstrators often chanted Shakarami’s name. The protest had arisen a few days before Shakarami’s disappearance, after another woman, Mahsa Amini (22), died in a cell. She was arrested for not wearing her hijab correctly.
