A group of 18 Republicans have been charged in Arizona for their efforts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in Donald Trump’s favor. This was announced by Kris Mayes, the attorney general in Arizona. Rudy Giuliani (Trump’s former personal lawyer and former mayor of New York; ed.) and Mark Meadows (Trump’s last chief of staff in the White House; ed.) are on the list, among others.

The indictment alleges a conspiracy to award a number of electoral votes in Arizona to Trump instead of his opponent Joe Biden. The current president defeated Trump in Arizona by barely 10,000 votes. However, according to Trump supporters, there was fraud and their favorite was the real winner. They never presented evidence for this.

The 18 defendants include eleven Republicans from Arizona, and the seven others are from out of state. Their names are blacked out in the indictment, but they can be identified based on the description. The ‘Washington Post’ writes that in addition to Giuliani and Meadows, this also concerns lawyers Jenna Ellis and John Eastman and campaign advisor Boris Epshteyn.

“Politically motivated”

Giuliani’s spokesman speaks of a “politically motivated” charge. The former mayor of New York was previously sentenced in Georgia to pay damages of more than 150 million dollars for statements he made about the alleged fraudulent conduct.

Trump himself has not been charged in Arizona. According to the Washington Post, he has been named as an unindicted co-conspirator. Elsewhere, such as in Georgia and Washington, Trump is still being prosecuted for the events after the 2020 election. Arizona is now the fourth state in which election officials have been charged.

Arizona is known as a ‘swing state’ and will once again play a key role in the new presidential elections in November.
