Zelenskiy mainly looks at the United States. An aid package of 57 billion euros has been on the table in Congress for months. But that proposal was not approved. A group of Republicans in Congress is backing former President Donald Trump, who wants to become president again for the Republicans. And he is extremely critical of US support for Ukraine.
For months, the Republican-majority House of Representatives failed to pass aid for Ukraine.
The House only approved the relief package last Saturday. The package was expanded to include aid for Israel and Taiwan, and also came with an ultimatum for TikTok to cut ties with China.
The proposal then had to go to the Senate, where the Democrats have a majority. Major problems were not expected there. The proposal was finally approved by a large majority of 79 against 18. 15 Republicans and 3 Democrats voted against.
Before the vote, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell stressed the importance of the aid. According to Schumer, there has rarely been a vote on something this important. McConnell called it “one of the bigger days” in his long history in the Senate.
