Former American President Barack Obama (62) will make himself heard and seen more in the re-election campaign of current President Joe Biden (81). Aides close to Obama say that the former president has been concerned for some time about the race and Biden’s chances of beating his Republican rival Donald Trump (77).

The popular Obama would like to increase his involvement – both publicly and behind the scenes – in the hope of generating more enthusiasm for Biden’s election campaign.

Biden and Obama have maintained regular contact in recent years. Obama also occasionally came to the White House for lunch. Last Friday there was a meeting with all hands on deck. Since then, Obama has called Biden’s chief of staff several times to discuss strategy.

Fundraiser

Today, Obama will also appear at a major fundraiser for Biden in New York, together with another popular former president: Bill Clinton (77). The campaign is already calling it “the most successful political fundraiser in American history” and hopes to raise no less than 25 million dollars (23 million euros).

In that respect, Biden is doing a lot better than Trump. The president’s campaign committees had $155 million (143 million euros) in cash at the end of this month, compared to Trump’s $74 million (68 million euros).

However, Obama has been warning Biden for months not to be too complacent and not to underestimate Trump. Biden’s team has also been criticized for being too slow to organize grassroots movements in several US states. However, they were a success factor in Obama’s election.

Trump currently leads by a few percentage points in the pre-election polls, but Biden is said to be catching up in a number of swing states.
