A man was declared brain dead with a four percent chance of survival after attempting to remove an ingrown hair. The doctors no longer had confidence, but his sister continued to believe. And that pays off, as the man learns to walk again.

Steven Spinale from the US state of Texas was, according to People diagnosed with blood poisoning as a result of the attempt to remove an ingrown hair. The 36-year-old was put into a medically induced coma after a month in hospital so he could recover. At the hospital, doctors said Spinale “wasn’t going to get out of here alive” and that he had no brain activity anymore.

Those words can be heard in a video on Tiktok by Spinale’s sister Michelle, who recorded her brother’s complete recovery process and shared it on that app. Michelle, unlike the doctors, always had faith in her brother’s full recovery. “If anyone can get through this, it’s him,” she wrote on Gofundme, which is raising money for Spinale.

The fact that brother Steven is indeed someone who can “get through this” is also evident from those videos. For example, Spinale can be seen opening his eyes to the sound of his sister’s voice after he had been in a coma for three weeks. After numerous treatments, Spinale eventually emerged from his coma without brain damage and has since made an almost complete recovery. And while the American also contracted double pneumonia in the hospital.

“We never lost confidence when others did,” Michelle said on Tiktok. Spinale is now back home and with the help of his loved ones, he is learning to walk again. This process can also be seen on Tiktok.
