In the new season of ‘Special Forces’ things may be even tougher than last year. In the second episode, the well-known recruits face the dreaded milling: a series of mentally and physically exhausting assignments. One assignment, especially for former cyclist Jan Bakelants and actress Lynn Van den Broeck, evokes old traumas, resulting in tears.

In ‘Special Forces’, eleven well-known figures once again undertake one of the toughest training courses in the world. In the previous episode, we already said goodbye to one recruit who was no longer happy. The remaining ten now come face to face with the next grueling task: the milling.

The recruits are given a series of assignments that are both physically and mentally very demanding. One of those assignments is climbing a meter-high waterfall. And that is something to swallow for ex-cyclist Jan Bakelants.

During the Tour of Lombardy in 2017, Bakelants fell six meters into a ravine. He then had to be evacuated as his back was broken. The rehabilitation that followed was grueling. ‘The fear of relapse is very great,’ says Bakelants.

Yet Jan seems to persevere and wants to reach the top at all costs. The discharge is therefore very great when he finally reaches the top and realizes how high he has climbed.

Guilt and tears

‘Thuis’ actress Lynn Van den Broeck also has a very difficult time in the second episode. During a boxing match with one of the instructors, the actress bursts into tears. ‘I walk away from situations that I feel like I have no control over. One of my mates used to get threatened because he was gay. I then started walking because I saw no way outiI still regret it. I was never that one step upbrill,” she says.

You can watch ‘Special Forces’ every Monday evening at 8:40 PM on VTM and via VTMGO.
