CelebritiesBernard Hill, known for his roles as King Theoden in “Lord of the Rings” and the captain in “Titanic,” was expected to reunite with the “Lord of the Rings” cast at a Comic Con on Sunday. The actor canceled at the last minute due to his partner’s illness, but a few hours later his manager confirmed to ‘BBC’ that the actor had died.
“Because Bernard’s partner is very ill, he can no longer attend the event. He sincerely apologizes and thanks all of you for your understanding,” Comic Con’s Instagram account said. Yet in the end it turned out that there was more going on. A few hours later, his manager confirmed to ‘BBC’ that the actor had died at the age of 79. Bernard’s cause of death is not yet known.
“Bernard was a true gentleman and an extremely talented artist. He was a wonderful man and we are saddened to hear of his passing. Our deepest condolences go out to his family. We will miss him enormously,” said his management’s statement.
Hill had just completed filming a new TV series. He starred opposite Martin Freeman in the second season of ‘The Responder’, the first episode of which was due to air on the BBC this weekend.
Hill’s first major role was as Yosser Hughes in the drama ‘Boys from the Blackstuff’. But Hill is best known for his portrayal of King Theoden in Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. He also played Edward Smith, the captain who awaits his fate at the helm of the ship in ‘Titanic’ until the icy sea water breaks through the window.
