MaldegemA man, living in Maldegem and working in the port, risks a prison sentence of three years for growing cannabis in his home in Maldegem. His roommate, who regularly lent a hand, risks a prison sentence of two years. The two were caught by accident.
Last year, due to unpaid bills, a bailiff and locksmith, assisted by the police, knocked on the door of the home of the two defendants. They were supposed to seize the household effects, but accidentally found a cannabis plantation there.
15,000 euros invested
“It was a plantation of about 300 plants. The first defendant had invested no less than 15,000 euros for this,” the public prosecutor outlined. “But I didn’t have any contacts yet, I didn’t know who I would sell to,” replied the first defendant. In addition to the cannabis plantation, it was also discovered that the man was illegally tapping electricity. During the intervention, the second defendant suddenly came home. His friend tried to protect him by minimizing his involvement, but his fingerprints were found all over the plantation.
The Public Prosecution Service asked for a three-year prison sentence and a fine of 8,000 euros for the first defendant. The second defendant faces the same fine and a two-year prison sentence. The lawyer of the first defendant, however, goes for the acquittal. “The police took the lead in the bailiff’s visit, while that was actually not allowed. They were not allowed to make any observations, only to offer support.”
