The Spaniard Rafael Nadal (ATP 3) was eliminated in the eighth finals at the US Open in the night from Monday to Tuesday by the American Frances Tiafoe (ATP 26). After 3 hours and 34 minutes it became 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-3.
In the quarterfinals, 24-year-old Tiafoe will face the Russian Andrey Rublev (ATP 11). With three times 6-4, he was too strong for the British Cameron Norrie (ATP 9).
It is the first time that the American has reached the quarterfinals at a grand slam tournament. In the past two years, he was eliminated in the eighth finals at the US Open. ‘I do not know what to say. I played incredible tennis, I don’t know what happened,” Tiafoe said in a first reaction. “It’s like the world has stopped spinning. Now I can tell my grandchildren later that I beat Rafa.’
The 36-year-old Nadal is stuck with 22 Grand Slam titles due to the defeat, with which he is still the only record holder. Earlier this season, he won the Australian Open and Roland Garros. At Wimbledon, he forfeited his semifinal against Nick Kyrgios.
“I played a bad game today and he did well. That made all the difference today,” Nadal said. ‘I couldn’t maintain a high level and was too slow in my movements. He could take the ball too early too many times, so I couldn’t push him back on the court. If I want to get to the quarter-finals, I have to do better. I have to admit he was stronger today.”
