The beautiful countryside in which this rural residence in Suffolk, England, is situated is its greatest asset. The architecture therefore remains simple, with large windows that frame the view like a large impressive painting. The pandemic gave the owners the opportunity to fully focus on the project, which led to this gem.
The transparent design, for which the team of Norm Architects from Copenhagen is responsible, emphasizes the wooden aspects of the house. This is ensured by the delicate steel construction and the roof in carbon gray metal. In this way, nature becomes a fundamental part of the design. The house stands on a podium of dark basalt, which gives the impression that it is separate from the ground and also gives the house a proud appearance. To create the beautiful views, the barn on the land was reduced by half and concrete made way for a relaxing terrace. The interior has the same open feeling. For example, the cozy living room is only separated from the kitchen and dining area by a brick wall with a wood stove, which makes the transition between the different functions in the house blend effortlessly. The bathroom became a refuge thanks to the use of dark colours, which also separates the space from the landscape and makes the views outside even more magical. The polished concrete also contrasts beautifully with the warm wooden elements.
The residence offers time, space, light and new possibilities
The outbuilding was expanded and now houses a music room, a TV room and a quiet workplace. Located close to the main building, it has the same shape of windows, extending the style across both buildings. The residence also features a second outbuilding, which serves as a sauna and offers magnificent views over the countryside. It provides the ultimate wellness experience. The owners saw in the house the potential to live in harmony with nature. According to them, the residence offers time, space, light and new possibilities. Finally, the house is also environmentally friendly by generating the necessary electricity for the most part. We are very impressed with this project and immediately experience a sense of calm when looking at the photos.
