The ride starts quietly: the first 170 kilometers are relatively flat, but then comes the Penas Blancas, the first really long col in this Vuelta. 19 kilometers at 6.7 percent average. The finish line is upstairs. Not a killer, but certainly not less. “It’s not the toughest climb, but I do think something will happen,” says Evenepoel. “I suspect that Mas will want to take back the second place from Roglic.” Will the predictions of our compatriot, who from now on also have to do without master servant and world champion Alaphilippe, come true?
