Brussels

Since March, the Regional Agency for Cleanliness in Brussels (Net Brussels) has equipped four collection vehicles, which are used almost daily to empty public rubbish bins, with cameras, computers and antennas to objectify the cleanliness of a large number of streets (337 km of roads). .

The system from the Swiss start-up Cortexia is already being used in Basel, Geneva, Bordeaux, Frankfurt and Hamburg, among others.

In practice, the camera system uses artificial intelligence to identify and classify waste lying around on the streets and sidewalks. The cameras accurately identify the types of waste most commonly found in Brussels (cigarette butts, paper and plastic, cans, dog waste, glass, etc.) and link them to places and periods.

Finally, the information is sent to a server to be combined to form a large map. This processing is fully automated.

Thanks to this system, Bruxelles-Propreté can draw up an objective status of the cleanliness level of the roads subject to the test.

Dynamic map

For this pilot experiment, the Agency is based on the Clean City Index (CCI), developed by the Swiss company, which works on a scale from 0 to 5.

The CCI is displayed on a dynamic map and shows color codes according to the cleanliness of the axles where the 4 trucks have passed. Blue represents a very clean road, green represents a sufficiently clean road and red represents a road that is classified as insufficiently clean.

The experiment runs until July 18 and includes the regional roads, the supra-municipal roads and the roads under contract with ten Brussels municipalities: Ixelles, Etterbeek, Evere, Oudergem, Sint-Gillis (Louiza Bottle Neck), Sint-Joost-ten-Noode, Sint- Lambrechts-Woluwe, Sint-Pieters-Woluwe, City of Brussels and Watermaal-Bosvoorde.

Just Brussels will communicate the full results of this experiment at the end of next summer and, together with the municipalities, determine what consequences can be given.
