How nice it is to finally win a coveted prize. At Union there is mainly relief after the cup win. In three seasons in which the Brussels club came close to silverware, they succeeded. “We wrote history today,” Christian Burgess tries to express his emotions after the match.

“What a relief!”, said both Christian Burgess and Alessio Castro-Montes immediately after the cup final.

“We suffered at the end, but only the end result counts. It was a real fight for every ball,” the latter shares.

“We tried to keep every attack from Antwerp out of our sixteen. And hey, in a few years no one will remember how we won the Cup.”

Burgess also knows that the level of play – especially in the final – was not sky high. “If we went to extra time, I didn’t know what would happen,” the defender laughs.

I am speechless. Maybe I won’t have processed it for a few days.

What now? A big party at Union, despite the league match that is already scheduled for Monday?

“Normally, a win with a clean sheet means two days off. That is becoming difficult now, but the boys have to celebrate this,” coach Alexander Blessin shares with a wink.

“They worked so hard, I’m so proud of them. What can I say? I’m speechless. Maybe I’ll process it in a few days.”

That history has been written. That’s what his defenders already say.

“It was in my head that it could be a historic day,” says Castro-Montes, who immediately wants to take that feeling with him. “This will be a boost for the rest of the competition.”
