‘A good death’

Marte cannot remember a time when she did want to live. She explains: “While people cannot imagine that you no longer want to live at my age, I cannot imagine that you do want to live. The idea that you get up and are looking forward to the new day…”

Her sister adds: “She doesn’t want life anymore, in any form. She also sometimes says that she hopes there is no life after death.” Marte suffers from an eating disorder: “I have had so many treatments and admissions. At first you hope to find something that works; I sincerely wanted to give the treatments a chance. At a certain point I no longer dared to show that I still had hope in certain treatments, because I was afraid of being disappointed again.”

Marte’s mother saw how difficult it was for her daughter: “I can feel how nice it is that you are allowed to live your life this way. So it’s not happening in a way that we feared all these years.” Marte’s father was very afraid that his daughter would harm herself: “When I went to bed at night, it could happen. I have also been called out of bed a number of times.”

Marte says: “I can’t live this life. You want to hold out until euthanasia, because you want to do it together with the people around you. You know it will be so much better for them. And I want to make sure it works. I don’t want to wake up in intensive care again.”
