Sending a letter will become more expensive from July. In two months’ time, PostNL will increase the price of a stamp by five cents to 1.14 euros. PostNL announced this when publishing the figures for the first three months of this year.

It showed that the company has fallen into the red. In the first quarter, PostNL recorded a loss of 8 million euros. A year ago, in the same period, the bottom line still amounted to 4 million euros. At PostNL, turnover declined, while costs rose sharply. PostNL mainly attributes the latter to higher wages for delivery drivers.

Director Maurice Unck says he is not happy with the implementation of the interim rate change. “However, it is necessary because we still deliver the mail five days a week, but there is much less mail and the costs are increasing.”

Not in one day

Herna Verhagen, the company’s chief executive, says that “it is clearly time for change.” PostNL previously made a plea to no longer deliver letter mail within one, but within two days. “And over time, within three days.”

To achieve this, the law must first be amended. In the meantime, PostNL is increasing the price of stamps “because less and less mail is being sent and costs are rising rapidly”.

In January, PostNL already increased the price of a stamp from 1.01 euros to 1.09 euros. The company emphasizes that the new price increase is within the legal scope to increase rates annually.
