More than half of Belgians, about 53 percent, indicate that the cost of a holiday is the deciding factor when choosing a destination. Only then do factors such as sun and heat, sights, local nature and proximity to the sea come into play. This is evident from Touring’s annual holiday barometer.

The bad weather of the past few weeks doesn’t give it away, but summer is approaching. For many, that means a trip to other places. About 78 percent of Belgians want to travel abroad. France remains the favourite. Spain and the Netherlands complete the top three. About 33 percent of Belgians are also satisfied with a holiday in their own country.

“Corona is now a thing of the past, and the war in Ukraine is also stopping few or no residents from planning holidays,” says Touring. “The Belgians seem to be price-conscious on holiday. The barometer shows that more than half let the destination be determined by the cost price. Still, 48 percent say the travel budget is not too much of a concern. It is part of the family budget. About 30 percent indicate that going on holiday is an expensive affair and that they find it difficult to save the amount.”

It still appears that, despite inflation, 57 percent of Belgians do not want to spend more on their main holidays this year than in 2023. About 26 percent think they will spend more on holidays this year and 17 percent have set themselves the goal of spending more on holidays this year. to save.

People staying at home

About 36 percent of those surveyed say they will spend a maximum of 1,000 euros on accommodation during their holiday, 26 percent spend between 1,000 and 2,000 euros and 26 percent do not mind paying 2,000 euros or more.

Finally, it appears that 12 percent of Belgians do not go on holiday and stay at home. They do this for various reasons. For 41 percent of them, the family budget is insufficient to go on holiday every year and just as many Belgians indicate that they have other costs this year.
