KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A US Senator from Missouri has moved to build an alliance with Taiwan to fight threats from China in a new kind of space race.
Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) announced on Thursday, May 2, that he introduced a new amendment to the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act that would build a strategic alliance with Taiwan in space.
Specifically, Schmitt said the Taiwan and America Space Assistance Act looks to build cooperation with Taiwan and counter the threat of China in space.
“Cooperation in space with a strategic partner such as Taiwan is undoubtedly a net positive for the United States. The Taiwan and America Space Assistance Act expands our cooperation with a vital ally and allows for advancements and research in space with Taiwan’s growing space program. Empowering our allies through partnerships such as this ensures America remains the global leader in space and puts us in a better position in the new space race with China,” Sen. Schmitt said.
Schmitt noted that the amendment would allow for extended cooperation between the Taiwan Space Agency and NASA as well as NOAA. It would provide a way to voluntarily exchange personnel from the two agencies to the Taiwanese agency to advance the country’s space capabilities.
The Senator also indicated that the amendment would extend cooperation in satellite program development, space exploration and atmospheric and weather programs.
