Anita van Westrop participated two days ago in the National Bodybuilding Championships in Oss, Brabant. After coming first in the preliminary round, she then walked away with the main prize.

Blood Sweat and tears

The road to gold was not easy, the 64-year-old bodybuilder said earlier to NH. “Multiple heart attacks, cerebral infarctions, rheumatism and long Covid, you name it and I’ve had it.” A difficult time full of hospital visits followed, a time that Anita is happy to put behind her. She prefers to focus on bodybuilding: “I have done many competitions in the past, but this was the easiest preparation and most fun time ever.”

Anita did her winning exercise on the song Stayin’ Alive of the Bee Gees. A nod to the heart attacks she survived. The pop song is often used during resuscitation to determine the rhythm of the cardiac massage.

“The whole room went crazy and even the jury stood on the chairs. It was overwhelming,” says Anita.

Yet the bodybuilder himself was not nervous at all. She was very confident that she would win the competition. She attributes this to her age: “I used to have more stress and nerves, but now I have a different approach to life.”
