Kortrijk has 16,334 students. They come from everywhere, including abroad. “We are proud of our vibrant student community and the diverse range of high-quality student rooms,” says Alderman for Building and Living Wout Maddens (Team Mayor). “On Saturday, May 4, everyone will have the opportunity to take a look at the world of student rooms during the first Kortrijk KOTrijk open viewing day.”

The city of Kortrijk today has 3,000 student rooms on offer and another 1,000 under construction. There are 230 buildings in which students are housed and there are 120 student halls. (read more below the photo)

“We lifted the moratorium on February 1, 2023,” says Maddens. “This means that student rooms could be built again. This also happened with the licensing of 1,600 rooms, spread over 43 projects. Forty of these have been started. Ten have been completed, amounting to 319 rooms. Thirty are still to come or are still under construction, accounting for 1,281 rooms. This includes the student tower of Vives University of Applied Sciences with 200 student rooms and the 100 student rooms in the Belgacom site in Kortrijk Center. In summary, this means that we will soon have 4,200 student rooms. If we calculate that 25 percent of the students will move into a room, then we will have a good supply of 4,000 rooms.”

“A room in Kortrijk costs an average of 423 euros,” says Maddens. “The Flemish average is 490 euros. In Leuven you pay 514 euros. Price increases are everywhere, but in Kortrijk the increase is less intense. We remain a cheap student city. The demographic evolution is such that the number of students would increase by 22 percent in the coming years.”
