Shorter on the ball

“We will elaborate the formation of mechanisms for price tunnels, with the activation of an alarm signal – a mechanism that triggers consultations when prices rise or fall too quickly,” Clarinval said. “A dozen specific branches will be formed to carry out differentiated analyses, because – to give just one example – prices in the potato sector are not the same as those in the chicken meat sector.”

Another objective is to give actors in these branches the opportunity to enter into permanent consultation with other players in order to propose solutions at federal level in the event of a crisis. Until now, Clarinval said, “these levers were often used too late, namely when the crisis was already a reality.” In the future, we will need to respond more quickly, so that we can respond more quickly to developments in the market.

Clarinval acknowledges that a coordinated crisis response across the EU would be better than a fragmented approach, but it is up to the next European Commission to address this point, he concluded.
