NATO: “No expansion of nuclear weapons in EU member states for the time being”

According to Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, NATO will not deploy nuclear weapons in other member states for the time being. “There are no plans to extend the current arrangement,” Stoltenberg said at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Tuesday.

On Monday, Polish President Andrzej Duda said his country was open to the use of American nuclear weapons. “If our allies decide to station nuclear weapons on our territory, as part of nuclear weapons sharing, to strengthen the security of NATO’s eastern flank, we are prepared to do so,” it said.

Poland, a member of the EU and NATO, is one of Ukraine’s closest military allies. It also borders the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and Russia’s ally Belarus.

The US has stationed nuclear weapons in several European countries for decades. There is no official information about the exact location, but they are said to be stored in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey. The US government has not yet indicated that it is considering stationing them in Eastern Europe, which Moscow would likely see as a direct provocation.
