Robert Stepanyan from the Trevianum in Sittard, together with some young bright minds from elsewhere in the country, won gold at the Science Olympiad in Luxembourg.

The winning student team also consisted of Kjeld Zwitsersloot (Gymnasium Beekvliet) and Jochem Kistemaker (Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam). Interesting detail: second place also went to a Dutch trio. A total of 46 teams from 24 countries participated.

The struggle focused on conducting experimental research and solving ‘problems involving biological, physical and chemical elements’. However, it was not just about science, as can be seen from Robert’s words. “We made friends with Bulgarians, Cypriots and Germans. I never expected that!”

It is not the first time that Stepanyan has won an award. Last summer, the youngster won bronze at the Physics Olympiad in Tokyo. There he represented the Netherlands as the country’s best physics student.
